I've taken their pictures a few times. It's always fun. And slightly tiring. Energetic kids. Which is a good thing in my book. I'd much rather they come with some personality than a bump on a log. The blonde little girl reminds me of my 5 year old. Strong personality and quick to make you laugh. And Jaqcui...she's going to be a famous author one day (still waiting on my preview of the book, Jacqui). And she was on MY blog.

Just finished reading this book. Good, easy read. My brother called it a "literary twinkie".

I'll admit when I read the premise of the book, I had my doubts. But it was definitely worth the late-night reads (which is the only time I have to read, and I do, every night).

I have some software I need to sell. I switched computer systems from a PC to a MAC after I made some software purchases.

So, I have ADOBE LIGHTROOM 2.0 as well as the ADOBE MASTER COLLECTION (the one with all the adobe products) for sale if anyone is interested. They're both brand new, unopened. Never used, never registered, never opened so they're good to go. Lightroom will work on a PC or a MAC. The master collection is for a PC.

I started drinking Diet Coke again. Addiction runs in my family. I'm blaming it on that. Truth is, I just like it. It makes me happy.
I can't sleep at night without a fan on. The power went out one night and I stared at the ceiling for 4 hours until it came back on. I finally bought a battery powered fan so I didn't have to rely on power.
If I could sleep in until 10 every day, I would. I've tried teaching my girls how to get their own breakfast, but so far it's not working.
I used to wake up at 5am EVERY MORNING and go running. The person I am now can't believe I ever used to do that. Every day (minus Sunday--everyone deserves one day to rest).
I never played with dolls or barbies growing up.
I hate socks. I don't put them on unless I have to or my feet become blocks of ice. Otherwise, I prefer bare feet.
My most recent confession: I have become a human binky. The new babe won't take binkies, yet he wants one. So I have become the substitute. We've got some things to work out around here.

This was my first official shoot back from maternity leave. This is the baby of a friend of mine who (is it who or whom? I've never understood that rule) I have known since we were 7. Almost 25 years. Between the two of us and our new babies, there was a lot of milking going on.

Photoshop Friday. Books and Websites.

So this may be the last week of doing this. Mostly because I've probably already divulged most of what I know. I really don't know Photoshop that well. Because I don't post-process much on my photos. I definitely do SOME stuff, but not much. I do my best to get pictures looking as good as possible coming straight out of the camera because I don't really enjoy sitting in front of a computer screen.
If anyone has further questions after this week, feel free to e-mail and i'll answer you personally.

I often get asked if I took a class to learn Photoshop. The answer is no. But I did NOT learn by just playing around. I started out by learning how to take good pictures coming straight out of the camera because you can only fix so much in Photoshop. Then I bought Photoshop Elements 5. I learned that first (I'll tell how in a minute). Then I moved on to Photoshop CS3. It was easier for me that way. And I am in NO WAY an expert on CS3. I probably know 1% of what there is to know. But I know enough to do what I need to.

So here's how I learned.

I bought a book. "The Photoshop Elements 5 book for digital photographers" by Scott Kelby. You can get it on Amazon. I found lessons in there that I wanted to learn and worked through the steps.

Then I went to www.kelbytraining.com This is an online training website run by Scott Kelby (same guy who wrote the book). I signed up for one month (which is $24.95) and did every tutorial I possibly could in that one month (and took notes because my brain retains things for about one day) and then cancelled my membership. I know they add new tutorials all the time so you could keep the membership month to month if you wanted. I also learned how to do Lightroom and Bridge from this site.

That's it. That's how I learned. At least learned what I needed to do what I wanted. There's still a LOT to learn.

My brother recently mentioned a site www.lynda.com where there are tutorials on just about anything you want to learn. I haven't used it, but he said it has tons of basic lessons to learn just about any software program.

So you don't need a class to learn photoshop. And you should definitely learn how to take good pictures FIRST and then move on to Photoshop to enhance a little. Google can also be your best friend. Type in your question and chances are you'll pull up tons of tutorials or directions from forums.

My "helper" who thinks he needs to be attached to me at all times. Thankfully I can work on the computer with one hand. I've gotten really good at scooting the mouse close enough to the computer so I can still "shift click".

And we may or may not be obsessed with the photo booth built into the computer. I haven't taken pictures of myself alone, at least, but that may be coming.

I did it. I switched from a PC to a MAC. Ahhhhhh..... I've been using a little laptop for everything. And it was too slow. And the screen was too small. And the hard-drive filled up way too fast. And I needed a desktop computer. With a LOT of memory, fast, big hard drive, big screen....So I searched. And searched. And decided to switch. And now I don't know how to do anything. Except get on the Internet and play with the built in photo booth.

I don't know how people survive without family. I'm pretty attached to mine. And though we're far from perfect, I wouldn't change a thing. Well maybe a thing. Or two. But I love them.

This is my family. Every last one of us (except for Carter who was in my stomach at the time). Seems like a simple thing. But it's pretty rare. Though we all live in Utah, it's not easy getting this group in one picture.

This was taken at my sisters cabin. And I took it, or my brother took it (we took several) and then a little photoshop magic put us all together. I wish I could blog the heckling taking place, but blogger would probably flag me. And my mother would cry all over again. :)

But here we are. Together. In one place. Priceless.

It's not a perfect picture and was never intended to be (unless you think suburbans in pictures is cool). But for various reasons, we need this picture. Of all of us. Together. Alive.

I don't need to air any dirty laundry--let's just say the show Intervention on A&E has a special place in all our hearts.

My point is, family pictures are important. Whether they're taken professionally or not. Because one day, someone might not be there anymore. And all you'll have left is memories and pictures.

Photoshop Friday. Getting some action.

Another installment of Photoshop Friday. And a clarification. You can ask questions about Photoshop Elements as well. Not just the professional version of Photoshop. You can do a lot of stuff in Elements that you can do in CS, just in a different way.

Today I'm talking about actions. There are a million actions out there. And frankly, I think most of them are a waste of money. I use VERY few actions. And all the actions I use are from Totally Rad Actions. If you buy any actions, these are the ones to buy. I have both sets. And love them.
Actions I use the most: Oh Snap. Gives pictures that crisp, vibrant look. I rarely use this at 100%. It's different on every picture.
I also use Yin/Yang for lightening or darkening different areas of a picture.
Those are my two most used actions. And most of the time the only actions I use on any picture.
I also like Kevin Kubota's Magic Sharp. You can just buy Magic Sharp by itself, you don't have to buy it in a set. Just call them and ask. I've also heard Kubota's Daily Multi-Vitamin is a good one, but I don't have it. I really try to limit the amount of actions I buy or use.

Next week I'll give a few tips on books/websites to check out to learn photoshop faster and easier (Elements and CS).

I can't believe it's been 13 years since I was a senior in highschool. I still feel like I'm 17 even if I do have 3 kids.
This is Jade. She's a senior. I've known her since she was a baby which should make me feel old, but again, I still feel 17.....
Anyway, she's beautiful. And really didn't want to get her pictures taken, but her mom still has a little bit of control over her. :) She was a sport. We went fast. And she's very easy to photograph.
Any seniors out there--it's about time to get your senior pics done. And I promise I won't make you do anything lame. Quick and easy. Seriously.

Photoshop Friday.

I thought I'd try a little experiment. Every Friday I'm going to post something related to editing photos or Photoshop. I get a lot of questions from people asking about editing or how to do things in Photoshop. So, I'm opening up to questions. If you have questions, any questions, about editing photos, using Bridge, or Photoshop, e-mail me. Then I'll address those questions on my blog.

To start off, I thought I'd give an example of how I edit. My rule of thumb when editing pictures is "less is more". With all my photos, I want them to look as natural and "real" as possible. So I try not to over-edit my photos.

This picture is straight out of the camera. I chose this one because it's a little under-exposed.

I open all my photos in "Bridge". I think this just comes with Photoshop. I do a lot of my editing here. In this photo, I bumped up the exposure and added a "strong contrast". Sometimes I add a little more "black" and "fill light" depending on the photo.

Then I open it in Photoshop. The first thing I do is use "curves" (Ctrl + M). I bring up the lights and take down the darks to add a bit more contrast. You can get the same effect using "levels" (Ctrl + L). I use the "spot healing brush" (looks like a bandaid) to get rid of blemishes (baby zits). Then I smoothed out the skin a little using "Pro Retouch" from Totally Rad Actions. If you don't have actions, you can get the same effect using Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur. I then did a little dodging and burning on the face and hand using Yin/Yang also from Totally Rad Actions. And then I do a little sharpening using Kevin Kubota's Magic Sharp. You can also do Filter-Sharpen-Unsharp mask.

I said I'd blog every day. And I am. But my laptop got attacked by spyware today. So I've been running a scan. 8 hours later it's still going. Apparently I have a lot of files on my computer.
So I can't access any pictures right now. Instead, I bring you an installment of "what's on my mind." Always a treat.

**'Survivor' is the best tv show ever. Ever.
**My newborn hates the car. And by hate, I mean he screams. Screams until he coughs and then chokes and then gasps for air. And then starts screaming again. It's awful.
**I have to eat a piece of chocolate after every meal. Even breakfast. It's weird and not a habit I'm proud of.
**I ran 2 days ago for the first time in about a year. I'm terribly out of shape and still sore from my 30 minute walk/very slow jog.
**I'm starving. All the time. I guess a product of breastfeeding.
**Carter's crying. As usual this time of night. Time to attend to the more important things in life! Back again tomorrow.

Now that he's almost 2 months old, I suppose I should post his newborn photos. It's a lot harder to be the photographer when you're also the recovering mom. So we split the shoot up to a few different days. And he really didn't want to be on his stomach. But I made him anyway.

I was slightly delusional before I had him--thinking I'd have time....time to do anything. In reality, I've had time to do nothing. Well, besides hold him. Which is actually something. I love holding him. And wish I could do it all day. And so does he.

So far we're surviving 3 kids. Still not thriving, but at least surviving. He's fussy. His tummy hurts. And he pukes. all the time. So we both smell like rotten milk which is awesome. They say he'll outgrow it. We're hoping that comes soon. But we love him anyway. And love having him as part of our family. Now we just have to teach Jaida how to change diapers and we'll be set.

I know most people do newborn photos with the baby naked. Frankly, I don't like getting crapped (or peed) on. And I'm partial to onesies. So we kept the clothes on.

Once upon a time I took pictures. And I posted them on my blog. And then I had a baby. Yikes.
I have a bundle of posts that never made it on here before the baby. So now I play catch up. So we'll start with family. This is my sister's (my only sister) family. They're a treat. :)

**Note: I am not back to work yet. I have to convince the little guy that bottle's are awesome before I start shooting again. I should be back by late March or early April if anyone wants to start scheduling shoots.**

I'm also looking forward to:
--sleeping on my stomach
--being able to walk up the stairs without getting winded and light headed
--eating normal amounts of food
--not "craving" bizarre foods (like chili, and cottage cheese--so weird)
--being able to hug my husband without a ginormous basketballish obstruction
--having room on my lap for my kids to sit when we read
--being able to lay on my back and still breath

On a "business" related note, I'll be posting several sessions this coming week. Promise. Unless the baby squirts out. And then I'll be mothering. And showing LOTS of pictures of the baby.

I'm way behind on blogging. And now blogging out of order. But I just finished editing this so I figured I'd blog it while I'm at it.

Newborns are a good excuse for family pictures. And newborns definitely need their pictures taken. This little guy is my neighbor. And he was only 5 days old. And if I wasn't having a baby in 3 weeks (yikes), I may have tried to steal him. And thankfully only his mom got whizzed on, not me, so I was happy.

Motivation.

It's worse this time than I remember before. The motivation level while pregnant. It's pretty much non-existent. Rolling out of bed (yes, I have to roll) and putting clothes on (and by "clothes" i mean sweats) is about where my motivation stops. And then I just want to crawl back in bed again. Doesn't help that my 3 year old thinks sleeping through the night is optional and that requesting apple juice at 2 in the morinng is perfectly acceptable.

I'm ready for one of these. Newborns. Love them. And NEVER have I ever wished for my newborns to be back in my belly. I miss nothing about pregnancy when it's over. Nothing. Newborns are heavenly. Can't wait.

For now, enjoy this little lady. And hopefully soon I'll be more motivated because I have plenty to do.

We survived Disneyland. And I took as many pictures as I could while 8 months pregnant pushing a stroller and often carrying my 3 year old. :)

Went and saw "The Blind Side" last night. By far one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Definitely worth your time.

Today I have an appointment with the dentist AND my OBGYN. Pretty sure my day is going to be more awesome than yours.

Looking forward to Thanksgiving on Thursday. I love me some turkey skin. Gross, I know, but everyone has their weakness's.

My neices. One of the perks of my job--getting to spend more time with family!

The details that most people don't care about (but a few photogs might). Shoot was in the middle of the day so I went for shade. All shot with a 50mm 1.4 lens. Setting generally around 2.2-2.8. I very rarely shoot wide open. I'm more of a 2.8 girl.

And these two are gems in front of the camera. They love it.

My first wedding album!!

I just recently started offering albums with my wedding packages. So this is my first official wedding album design. These albums have hard pages (like a board book) so they won't tear. They're 10x10 (10x20 page layouts) and the pages lay flat. They're pretty much awesome. Way better than the album I got when I was married.

For any photographers who are wondering or care, I designed all of these mostly from scratch (used parts of some template layouts from Design Aglow) in photoshop CS3. And yes, album designs take a lot of time.

A little story that makes me laugh. Yesterday she was kneeling down and her foot fell asleep. She stood up and tried to walk, looked at me in surprise and said:

Sometimes I walk away from a shoot knowing that pretty much every shot is going to be awesome. And this shoot didn't disappoint. I think Emily and Trent came out of the womb ready to get their pictures taken. It was almost effortless (except that I'm fat and pregnant so even breathing takes effort). And despite the treachery of where we went, we had fun. Right? Right.
And in case anyone is wondering, Emily's mom made her dress. She pretty much rocks the sewing machine. And she brought candy to the shoot which makes her that much radder. It's a word. Promise.

Definitely my favorite.

She's a laugher (it's an official term). Love that about her. I've actually had someone tell me I laugh too much, so it's always nice to find other laughers.

Alta Girls Soccer. STATE CHAMPIONS!!! Again.

Wikipedia: "A sports dynasty is a team that dominates their sport or league for multiple seasons or years." Looks like Alta has itself a dynasty. Last Friday they won their FOURTH State Championship in a row. Unbelievable. They played the Davis Darts at Rio Tinto stadium. Alta scored. Davis scored. Alta scored. Davis scored. Alta scored. Then, with about 30 seconds left in the game, Davis scored. Overtime. After 20 more minutes, no one scored. Shoot out. After 7 penalty kicks on each side, Alta squeaked by with a win. Most girls who play high school soccer never get the chance to play in a state championship. And for those who do, only half of them win. The Seniors on Alta's team won the state championship EVERY YEAR they played. Congratulations to the Alta Lady Hawks Dynasty!!!

Not to mention trying to keep my own 2 little girls entertained, fed, and happy as well as re-arranging all the rooms in our house to make way for another member of the family. And I'm a cow and desparately in need of sleep. Other than that, not much going on around here. :)

Cheryl is the longest friend I have. We met when we were 7. And I went to highschool with her husband. And neither of them have changed much over the years. They're just consistently cool. And it's no surprise that their kids have more personality than they know what to do with.

I'm pretty happy with the results from this shoot. Just sayin'.

My favorite. I'd like to say we had some safety precautions during this shot. You know, a net below him or some chords tied to his leg in case his dad lost his grip while swinging him back and forth and the little guy shot out of his hand. We obviously didn't. And thankfully his dad didn't let go. And it's one of my favorite family shots ever.

I cornered them on the front porch. And told them they couldn't play with friends if they didn't let me take their picture. And I'm not ashamed of my threats. Because I have to do what I have to do. And if I could pass along one piece of advice about taking pictures (good pictures--one's you'd hang on your wall) of your kids--don't. Because it's really hard. They'll always behave better for someone else. And do things for someone else they won't do for you. :)

So here are my girls. On my front porch. As they were on their way out the door to play with friends. Because they live and die for friends. First thing they ask in the morning (after Mya asks for candy): "Can we play with our friends." And so our house is grand central station. Little girls everywhere. And I love it. I'd rather have them here. Trashing my house. Because I love to watch them play (and know what they're doing). Kids are hilarious.

If I had to pick just one thing to photograph, it would probably be kids. They're unpredictable, always on the move, and they make me laugh. Hanging out with Cam for a few hours made me so much more excited to have a boy of my own. Boys are awesome.

We couldn't be more excited about the newest addition to this family! They've been waiting a long time for this little guy. Justin and Pam are good friends of ours. I've known Justin forever and he lucked out and talked Pam into marrying him (or he may say Pam lucked out and got to marry him. . . .either way). My husband and I were with them the night of their first date. And now they're a family of 3. Something they've been patiently waiting for longer than most of us have to.

Can't wait for our little guy to get here so he and Jack can be buddies.

Today is my mom's birthday. The woman who squoze (I'm sure it's a word) me out, loved me always, and is the perfect example of how a mom should treat her children. As I sifted through pictures trying to find some of her, I realized I don't have nearly enough photographs of her. Time for some photoshoots, Mom. Buckle up.

So maybe we took these pictures 5 days before Ashley got married. Nothing like a little time crunch.

And when she showed up at the location I chose, I had to remind her various times to not take in "the whole" as much as "the parts" of where we were. I think it turned out to be a fantastic spot for bridals. Even if she did have to walk through a thorny field (in flip-flops) possibly infested with chiggers (that's for you Jaimi and April). If you don't know what chiggers are, I'm sure you can google it to see some nasty pictures.

Here I thought it would be fun to see how long she could squat. Just seeing if those wall sits from 7th grade gym class were still paying off.

Meet Heather and Koko (short for a name I won't even begin to try and spell). Two of the most genuinely good people I've ever met. Thanks for flying me clear across the country for the party! You guys know how to have some fun.

Not a lot of time for pictures. There was a party to get to. But here's a little of what I saw throughout the day.

A very cool temple, albeit a difficult one to find. There's just so many dang trees in DC. I was really missing my mountains and spacious open valley.

This is the daughter of one of my closest friends since highschool. Kate gets her red hair from her dad, but her fiery personality from her mom. I made Kate's mom mad once and had to lock myself in a car for quite a while for fear she was going to kill me. I sat and laughed at her while she pounded on the windows. It was awesome.

These little gals mom is my "go to" girl when I need anything creative. So when I needed some ideas for product packaging after I got my new logo (courtesy of Seth Bradley. . .more details on that coming soon.) I immediately thought of her. And in return, we did a little photoshoot of her girls. They're cute, fun, and very well behaved. A perfect combination.

And then we did a little FUNBOOTH session! Always a good time.

I am now completely booked for August. I am booking sessions for September and October. I will NOT be scheduling any sessions after October 29th. The ONLY exception will be newborns because they can't wait and you can't plan ahead. :)
So. . . if you want family pictures, pictures of your kids, pictures for Christmas cards, etc. schedule an appointment soon.
I only schedule a certain amount of sessions a week and Saturdays fill fast. And I'm seriously not shooting in November or December. And for that matter, I won't be shooting in January, February, and maybe March while I spend all of my time enjoying the new baby that will be joining our family in December. :)

I may possibly be offering a day or two in late September or early October of "mini-sessions" for family pictures. And I might (might) also be offering Christmas cards this year. Stay tuned for more information on those.

My first official destination wedding! All the way across the country in Washington DC. My planes didn't crash, I only got lost once, the couple was amazing, the families were fun and gracious, the reception a total party!

Tom and Ashley were referred to me by a mutual soccer acquaintance. She was my goalie during highschool, and was Tom's coach during his high school seasons.
We met near Ashley's house to have some fun with the horses. They were a bit jittery (no idea how to spell that) and I'll admit, made me a little nervous. The last thing I needed was a hoof to the face. Thankfully we all made it through un-harmed and Tom and Ashley were awesome to work with.

Well hello Mr. Ed. Check out the horse's perfectly parted hair. Love it.

Wheelbarrows are precarious things. One false move and you spill whatever is inside. It also doesn't help when it has a flat tire.

I sure like this family. Cyndy is a friend I made while on a mountain biking trip with a bunch of boys. She's tough. And Josh helped me get a ticket off my record. He's a lawyer. And I did NOT deserve the ticket (just for the record). And their boys are some of the most well behaved kids I've ever been around. We did this shoot in about 45 minutes because Josh had a soccer game he had to get to. Priorities. I'm right there with him. Soccer is more important than most things.

He didn't really know how to sit by himself well, so setting him on the pavement was a little dicey. We went for it anyway.

Poor little guy kept felling asleep. And we kept waking him up. It's rough being a baby.

You may recognize Emily from a previous shoot. She's done being "Miss" and is ready to be a "Mrs." Now it's not just Emily. It's Emily and Trent. And they're getting married. And they're tons of fun.
Thanks to Emily and Trent for scouting out the locations, and a huge thanks to Trent who rode in a small truck with no airconditioning and a dozen balloons. He's a good sport.
I rented a tilt-shift lens for this shoot so any blurring you see on any of the pictures is all done in camera. Just another lens to add to my wish list.

This little guy came into the world under some rough circumstances. He obviously pulled through. And he was one of the easiest newborns I've ever photographed. Rub the little guys head and he's out.

I love back wrinkles. At least on little babies.

You know when you haven't exercised for a long time. And then a situation arises where you are forced to run. And not just any run, a run up a mountain. And even though your lungs are going to explode, you're light headed, and you feel like you're going to puke at any moment, you have to keep running because you have no other choice. Because you're in a race. Against the sun. And the sun sets when it wants to. You can't slow it down. And you can't make it come back up again. And so you run. Up a mountain. And you're going slower than the girl wearing high heels and your loud breathing causes the people in front of you to turn around in concern. It's humbling. And yet, we made it. Just in time. And in my opinion, it was worth it. Even though my lungs still hurt today.

Motivation

My motivation level for blogging has been greatly lacking. I have stuff to blog. Patiently waiting in its little folders. But summer has hit and sitting at a computer is pretty low on my list of exciting and fun things to do.

In the meantime, I may or may not have picked me up one of these babies.

It's pretty awesome if you like cameras that can take pictures in virtual darkness and have HD video and have 20+ megapixels (if I ever wanted to get in the business of shooting stuff for billboards. . .you never know) and take amazing pictures with incredible color. My husband thinks based on the price, the camera shouldn't even need me to operate it. Probably so. But it's still awesome.

HAPPY 4th of JULY weekend to all. Yea for living in a free country!!!

Labradoodles anyone?

You've seen these little ladies before. But it's the debut for the puppies. And my first puppy shoot. If anyone is wondering, trying to get 7 puppies to stay close together is like trying to get 7 babies happy at the same time. :) It was fun, though. And the girls--they loved those puppies. And I mean really loved them. Like, squished them loved them.
If anyone wants one of these (puppies, not the kids--I don't think they're for sale--at least today they aren't), you can check out the website here. They're labradoodles. Which is a cross between poodles and a labradoor retriever (I googled it--that's what I had guessed based on the name, but I wanted to make sure). They supposedly don't shed. Definite plus when it comes to pets.
